NATIVE HISTORY

We all know Native Americans have faced many struggles, such as dealing with the genocide of their population, the inhumane colonization of their people, and not being able to own their rightful land. In today’s world, it’s been over 100 years since those times, and now, I wonder how their lives have changed since then. I learned Native American people have been more freed yet caged in a couple of ways that I found pretty shocking. For example, influencers like Michelle Chubb (Insta/Tiktok: indigenous_baddie) and Theland Kicknosway (Insta: the_landk/Tiktok: the_land) have been seen on their Instagrams and Tik Toks rocking their native attire while also sharing videos of sacred dances/information about their culture to their thousands of followers. Now, while those are fantastic things, what most people don’t know is that in some areas, like the Southern Unite Reservation and Navajo Nation, the government is in charge of not only the land but all Native American care and frankly, there, doing a horrible job at it. Since they are the sole owner of the lands, that makes it incredibly difficult for natives to start a business or make a profit on the natural resources they have. This leaves many natives who could be wealthy in very poor and unhealthy conditions. I got all of this intriguing information from a Forbes article that constantly referred to native Americans as Indians, which completely misrepresents their identity and puts them back in a box they have tried for generations to get out of.  In conclusion, there is a lot more work to be done before this broken society can avenge the native community for all they have done to them. Although its true change has occurred, it is not nearly enough to fix all the holes.
